The IRS issued the new W-4 Form for 2020. If you’ve taken even a brief look at the form you’ll see that there is not a single part about allowances. In previous years, we could claim allowances and with our filing status, it would determine how much tax was being withheld. With the 2020’s W-4, it is now history. Those who want to withhold tax at a higher rate will still have option to do so. On Step 5 of the W-4 Form 2020, you can set the amount of extra withholding. If you did not complete a federal Form W-4 prior to January 1, 2020 or beginning January 1, 2020 completed a federal Form W-4 but did not submit a Nebraska Form W-4N, your employer must withhold as if you were single and claimed no withholding allowances. The IRS recommends that taxpayers access the online W-4 Calculator as early as possible to check their payroll withholding and adjust withholding allowances, if needed. The IRS calculator asks about income and marital status, as well as estimated deductions and tax credits, to determine whether any additional withholding is necessary.

The simple answer to this is no. Because there is no way that you can claim allowances on the new W-4 Form. Instead, you’ll need to detail the following.W 4 Single 2 Allowances

*Whether you have dependents or not
*If so number of dependents that qualify for under the age of 17
*Number of other dependents
*Your income earned outside of jobs
